Abstract

Since its inception mahiya has been an integral part of Punajbi folklore. It has retained its distinct form which is meant to be sung rather than written. Considering its form and metrical pattern mahiya is one and a half metrical lines in length with its own tune and rhythm. Mahiya derives its beauty and uniqueness from its distinct form. Since its introduction to Urdu literature the debate regarding its structure and metre has never settled. Mahiya was introduced into Urdu in 1937, in form of film songs that became very popular. Later many Urdu poets started writing mahiya and started considering it a genre of Urdu literature but failed to internalize the original form of mahiya and their experiments did more damage than good to its original form where first line is half in length and unrelated to the message of the poet and merely provides basic rhyme for the next full-length line. Urdu poets throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries kept experimenting with the form and gradually came to grip with the true form of mahiya, while rejecting the harmful experiments of the earlier years. This article explores the brief history of mahiya, its form and structure, in Urdu literature.
