Abstract

Besides other good and bad customs in Pashtun’s society, Walwar, the custom of giving one's daughter’s hand in marriage in return for some monetary gains, has remained one of the constant themes in Urdu fiction. The evils of this Pashtuns’ custom has been highlighted by both the ancient and modern fiction writers. It can safely be assumed that the remnants of this practice do exist in one or the other form. All great Urdu writers have urged upon Pashtuns to eliminate it altogether. Although Pashtuns are the staunch believers and practicing Muslims yet when it comes to traditions they seem fully shackled. Even an otherwise educated and learned person cannot dare to resist social and cultural constraints. The fiction writers, keeping Pashtuns culture before them, have always tried to harmonize the value of Pashtoonwali with that of Islamic principles. They have, in their work, also given the impression that if Pashtuns eliminate this evil custom from their culture and retain good values honestly it will promote Pashtun culture which will become one of the civilized nations of the world. Culturally, the study of such evil custom is the need of hour and it is with this in mind that the following research material is put before you for your perusal.

Key Words:(Pashtun, Pashtun’s society, Pashtoonwali,  Walwar, Mairman, dowery, chargul, kaldary, Islamic principles)
